Summary

Dennis R. Shaw, who stepped down last month as chief information officer at the Patent and Trademark Office, has be appointed to the newly created position of Chief Technology Officer at the Smithsonian Institution. At the Patent Office, Shaw initiated electronic filing of patent and trademark applications over the Internet, a revenue accounting system and a data management program. A Vietnam veteran, Shaw had been a General Accounting Office auditor, head of the Marine Corps' information resources management, and chief of staff and director of operations for the Defense Information Systems Agency's Center for Information Management. At the Smithsonian, Shaw is the senior executive responsible for all information technology within the institution, which then comprised of 16 museums and the National Zoo. Shaw stepped down in 2006 and was succeeded by Ann T. Speyer, then SI Chief Technology Officer
