In the letter, Henry apologizes for neglecting to reply to Jackson's letters. He states that since the fire at the Smithsonian Institution Building, or "Castle," on January 24, 1865, his time has been consumed by official duties, including dealing with the United States Congress to adjust and direct the affairs of the Institution. Henry goes on to discuss the deaths of Smithsonian Regents, and friends, General Joseph Gilbert Totten and Alexander Dallas Bache.
