Illustration of a siren fog signal as depicted in John Tyndall's On Sound (1875 edition). Joseph Henry, first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, conducted fog-sailing experiments with this instrument and demonstrated its power to Tyndall, who borrowed it for his own experiments in England.
