A record of an experiment demonstrated to his class by Joseph Henry, then a professor at Princeton University and later first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, February 21, 1846. In the experiment, Henry demonstrated one of his large magnets that was constructed in 1833. The magnet was able to hold 3500 pounds and Henry notes that he it is the most powerful magnet ever made at the time.
