Summary

Letter from Mahlon Dickerson, Secretary of the Navy, to Joseph Henry, then a professor at Princeton University and later first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, December 15, 1836. In the letter, Dickerson acknowledges Henry's work in the field of magnetism, and asks him to provide some topics of inquiry for the United States Navy's South Sea Exploring expedition to consider in order to further promote the research and work on the subject of magnetism.
