Summary

At the request of Assistant Provost for the Sciences, Robert S. Hoffmann, the Smithsonian Internet Users Advisory Committee issues the 26 page Report of the Internet Implementation Committee. The committee began work on February 19, 1992, on the report that set the framework for connection of all Smithsonian staff to the Internet. Many Smithsonian staff already had access to email through PROFS and BITNET, but this step would allow Smithsonian staff to exchange files and gain access to super computers all over the world. Responsibility for overseeing access to the Internet is placed with the Office of Information Resource Management, with policies to be established for security, education, ethics, and information exchange.
