PrintReverend Stephen R. Riggs' "Grammar and Dictionary of the Dakota Language" is published as volume 4 of the Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge. The publication is jointly sponsored by the Historical Society of Minnesota, the American Board of Missions, and the Smithsonian. The vocabulary in this volume was collected by Riggs and his fellow missionaries over the course of eighteen years. First Smithsonian Secretary Joseph Henry considers the study of Indian languages as key to understanding the origins and history of North American natives.
