Summary

Letter from Joseph Henry, first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and Salmon Portland Chase, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Smithsonian Institution Regent, to the United States Congress, May 1, 1868. In the letter, Henry and Chase request that the United States National Museum holdings be removed from Smithsonian responsibility.
