Summary

Letter from Joseph Henry, first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, to Asa Gray, a Havard University botanist, January 18, 1849. In the letter, Henry informs Gray that he has not yet secured him a position on a government boundary expedition. Henry states, "you have no idea of the difficulty of transacting business [in Washington, D.C.]."
