Summary

Letter from Joseph Henry, first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, to Helen Henry, his daughter, April 21, 1865. In the letter, Henry describes President Abraham Lincoln's funeral at the White House on April 18, 1865, which he attended as the representative of the Smithsonian Institution. During the Civil War (1861-1865), Henry was a scientific advisor to Lincoln.
