The National Portrait Gallery's exhibit opened in Hong Kong December 18, 1987, marking the beginning of the first overseas tour of a major exhibition from the gallery. The catalogue cover features an oil on canvas portrait of Willard Huntington Wright, an author who wrote under the pseudonym S. S. Van Dine, painted by Stanton MacDonald-Wright in 1913.
