A drawing showing the exterior of the original Corcoran Gallery of Art at 17th and Pennsylvania Avenue. The building was designed by architect James Renwick, Jr., and built in 1859. In 1972, the building was transferred to the Smithsonian Institution, and named the Renwick Gallery of Art. The National Collection of Fine Arts, now the Smithsonian American Art Museum, with the additional gallery space, devoted the gallery to American creativity in crafts, design, and decorative art.
