Summary

Letter from Solomon G. Brown, the first African American employee of the Smithsonian Institution, to then Assistant Secretary Spencer F. Baird, and later second Secretary, reporting on the possible danger in Washington, D.C., due to Confederate troops nearby. Since the Smithsonian Institution Building, or "Castle," located in the center of D.C., was vulnerable to attack, Brown inquired as to whether he should get Baird's silver ready for sending to him at Carlisle.
