An expense page, from a "Memorandum of Traveling Expenses" kept by Eugene A. Schwarz on his trip to the Canal Zone, Panama. It shows expenses for three meals in Paraiso, Panama costing $2.00 and laundry costing $1.00. Schwarz was part of the Smithsonian Institution sponsored Biological Survey of the Panama Canal Zone.

Historic Images of the Smithsonian


Eugene A. Schwarz (1844 - 1928), was an entomologist who, in 1878, obtained a post with the Department of Agriculture, a function he kept until his death in 1928. He was stationed throughout his career at the Smithsonian Institution's Division of Insects, United States National Museum, now the National Museum of Natural History, and played a very important role in the organization of its insect collections.
