Dr. Charles G. Abbot is seated at a desk in his office in the Smithsonian Institution Building. His back is to the camera and he is looking to his left. Papers are on the desk. Dr. Abbot was an astrophysicist, second Director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) (1907-1928), and fifth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1928-1944). The image was taken by Ruel P. Tolman, Director of Smithsonian National Collection of Fine Arts, and is included in a scrapbook of photographs of Smithsonian staff, grounds and buildings, exhibitions, and Washington, D.C. scenes.
