Summary

After he was appointed Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Joseph Henry's first major project was to create the Smithsonian Meteorological Project by using a country wide network of voluntary observers to record climate information and send it to the Smithsonian via the growing telegraph network. The Smithsonian Meteorological Project existed from 1846-1870 and led to the founding of the National Weather Service. This data gives the number of instruments loaned and number of observers for the Smithsonian's Meteorological Project in the several states of the Union in 1872. The instruments loaned were a barometer, thermometer, pscychrometer, and rain gauge. Two legal size, 4 page documents listing 42 states and data.
