Augustus Radcliffe Grote (1841-1903) was one of the leading American entomologists of the nineteenth century. In 1881, Grote sold his valuable collection of Lepidoptera to the British Museum, and permanently left the United States in 1884.

Historic Images of the Smithsonian


Collection of photographs of noted lepidopterists active primarily from the 1840s through the 1950s was assembled over a period of years by staff of the Department of Entomology of the National Museum of Natural History. The majority of the images are not original prints; they were cut out of professional journals and books.
