Stejneger was the first full-time curator of the Department of Herpetology, United States National Museum. He came to the Smithsonian in 1881 as an ornithologist. Upon the resignation of Henry Yarrow, Stejneger was appointed to the position of Curator the Department of Reptiles and Batrachians, while remaining Head Curator of the Department of Biology.
