To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of James Smithson, founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution, a three day celebration was held September 16, 17, 18, 1965. The event included an academic procession. The procession, some of whom are shown here going across the Mall, included leaders, who are dressed in their academic robes, from the fields of the sciences and the humanities. The east wing of the Smithsonian Castle is visible in the background.
