To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of James Smithson, founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution, a three day celebration was held September 16, 17, 18, 1965. The event included an academic procession. Shown here are the backs of the leaders dressed in their academic robes of the procession as they proceed across the Mall toward the Natural History building visible through the trees. The procession included leaders from the fields of the sciences and the humanities.
