Summary

  • Dr. Eva J. Pell is appointed Under Secretary for Science for the Smithsonian Institution. Pell replaced Acting Under Secretary Charles R. Alcock of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, who replaced Acting Under Secretary Ira Rubinoff of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, who served in the position after David L. Evans resigned in 2007.
  • Since 1973, Pell worked at Pennsylvania State University as a faculty member, Vice President for Research, Dean of the Graduate School, and was named Senior Vice President and Dean in 2006. Pell's research areas include, biology, environmental science, plant pathology, and agricultural sciences. She also has experience in developing cross-disciplinary studies for life sciences, materials, energy and environment, social sciences, cyber science, and arts and humanities.
