Summary

Edwards "Ted" Park of Smithsonian Magazine shovels dirt into a bag Barbara Munford is holding while Richard Efthim is kneeling in the dirt. Barbara Munford and Richard Efthim are with the National Museum of Natural History Naturalist Center. The bags are to be used to dam the stream around the site of a Mammoth skeleton. In March 1982, Smithsonian archaeologists and paleontologists began excavating a complete mammoth skeleton in Prince George's County, Maryland. Dana M. D'Aria, a 24 year old student from the University of Maryland, discovered the rare full fossil. Remains of mammoths are uncommon to the East Coast. Smithsonian Institution scientists Robert Purdy, Tim Rose, and Richard Efthim assessed the site and obtained permission for SI to dig. Museum of Natural History's Dr. Dennis Stanford directed the excavation with the aid of Dr. Gary Haynes and volunteer James Rancier.
