The Albatross is the first example of Edison's electricity on a ship. This photograph was taken at Woods Hole Station, Massachusetts. Smithsonian Institution scientists traveled aboard the Albatross on scientific expeditions. The ship has a fully functioning science lab.

- Three versions of this print exist, [A] is in black and white and measures 10 w x 7.5 h, [B] is sepia, and [C] is in black and white and measures 5.5 w x 4 h.
- The Albatross was built in 1882 for the US Fish Commission (also known as the US Bureau of Fisheries in 1903 and currently the National Marine Fisheries Service). For 40 years, the steamer traveled the north Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States, the Caribbean, Alaska, the Hawaiian Islands, Japan and the Philippines conducting marine research.
