In 1996, David Pawson, Curator of Echinoderms, is appointed acting director of the National Museum of Natural History and serves until the appointment of Robert W. Fri as director later that year. He succeedes Donald J. Ortner, who served as acting director from 1994 to 1996, after the resignation of director Frank H. Talbot.
