Summary

Ichthyologist James C. Tyler is appointed acting director of the National Museum of Natural History, upon the resignation of Richard Fiske, who wished to return to research. Tyler serves for several months until Robert S. Hoffmann is appointed director. In 1988, after Hoffmann is appointed Assistant Secretary for Science, Tyler again serves as acting director. He also served as acting director of the National Air and Space Museum from 1986 to 1987.
