Summary

Physical anthropologist T. Dale Stewart (1901-1997) is appointed director of the National Museum of Natural History. He replaces Albert C. Smith, who had served since 1958. Stewart is director for four years, until he is appointed Assistant Secretary for Science in 1966. As NMNH director, Stewart oversees the construction of the east and west wings of the building, greatly expanding space for the staff and collections. He is replaced by botanist Richard S. Cowan in 1965.
