PrintOn March 31, 2009, the Smithsonian Photography Initiative (SPI) joined the Smithsonian Institution Archives (SIA) in effort to bring Smithsonian photographic collections together virtually and enable cross searches and discovery. SPI was established in 2001 to develop a model to make SI photographs more accessible and visible to the public. SIA is the official repository for the Smithsonian Institution's records. SIA's mission includes the care of the SI records, and it creates products and services that promote understanding of the Smithsonian and its history. The partnership between SIA and SPI was formed to increase access and use of their photographic collections both on site and via the web. Plans for the integration of the two branches will be headed by Anne Van Camp, Director of the Smithsonian Institution Archives.
