Image, taken by Alexander Wetmore, ornithologist and sixth Secretary of Smithsonian, on an ornithological field trip to Panama, is of Ciénaga Macana, near El Rincón, Herrera, Panama. Ciénaga Macana, now known as La Ciénaga de las Macanas, is a large, widespread wetland. This place is considered today to be one of the best spots for aquatic species in the country. The wetland is a floodplain of the Santa Maria River, one of the largest in the Isthmus.
