Marion Stirling, wife of archaeologist and director of the Smithsonian's Bureau of American Ethnology Matthew W. Stirling, and Alexander Wetmore, ornithologist and sixth Smithsonian Secretary, examine potsherds at a drying table in Parita, Herrera, Panama. Stirling and Wetmore are standing in front of a table with potsherds in a compound surrounded by an enclosure of tree trunks. Wetmore appears to be holding something in his hand which they are examining.
