Matthew W. Stirling, archaeologist and director of the Smithsonian's Bureau of American Ethnology, examines bird effigy pottery in Parita, Herrera, Panama. He appears to be standing inside an area surrounded by a tree trunk fence. A lookout tower that has a ladder leading up to it and a hut are visible in the background. Long tables with pottery on them have been are in the yard. The image was taken by sixth Smithsonian Secretary and ornithologist, Alexander Wetmore, while on one of his many scientific expeditions to the country.
