Summary

Secretary Robert McCormick Adams presented the Secretary's Gold Medal for Exceptional Service to Madeleine Jacobs and William Moss at a surprise reception for senior management on July 28th. Jacobs had just resigned as the director of the Office of Public Affairs and received the award for her work on the Smithsonian outreach. Moss had just retired as the head of Smithsonian Institution Archives and received the award for his work on enhancing the Archives' operations.

  • The Secretary's Gold Medal for Exceptional Service was created in 1964 and is the highest honor given to Smithsonian staff by the Secretary for exceptional service over a long period of time. According to a 1994 Torch article, Ralph Rinzler also received this award in 1993.
