Summary

According to the Brief Guide to the Smithsonian Institution, c.1950, an observation beehive was located in the Arts and Industries Building. The guidebook states, "Opening off from the rubber exhibit is a glass observation hive of thousands of Italian honey-bees, where throughout the warmer part of the year the visitor may watch the busy bees bring in nectar and pollen from flowers out-of-doors."

Photographic evidence suggests that the observation beehive was on display in the food exhibit in the Comparative Technology section as early as the 1890s.
