Board of Regents Appoints Secretarial Search Committee

PrintCristián Samper, Acting Secretary of the Smithsonian, announces that the Board of Regents has appointed a search committee to select a new Secretary of the Institution. Members are Alan G. Spoon, Regent; Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA), Regent; L. Hardwick Caldwell, Chair of the Smithsonian National Board; Anne d'Harnoncourt, Regent; Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Regent; Walter E. Massey, Regent; Jeffrey P. Minear, Administrative Assistant to Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., Chancellor; and Roger W. Sant, Regent. The committee will also select three members from the Smithsonian community. Subsequently, Irwin I. Shapiro, former director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and W. Richard West, director of the National Museum of the American Indian, are added to the search committee. On July 13, 2007, the Regents announced that Dr. Maxine Singer, President Emeritus of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, had been added to the search committee.
