In February 1979 the "R.V. Benjamin" completed its refitting, and it began its research with a voyage in March to Cocos Island off Costa Rica. STRI scientists were joined by Costa Rican conservation officials in an effort to obtain data necessary for the designation of Cocos Island as a national park.
