Summary

During 1973 STRI's research vessel situation changed completely. The Institute received from the Navy a 65-foot surplus T-boat, which was named the "Dos Mares." Conversion work was done at STRI with the help of the University of Panama. The 65-foot "Tethys" was retired after 18,000 miles and 72 cruises for 66 different scientists in STRI's service. STRI also received as replacement a 42-foot boat confiscated for drug running by the United States Coast Guard and was renamed "Stenella."
