Summary

Richard S. Cowan is appointed director of the National Museum of Natural History, succeeding Dr. T. Dale Stewart, who left to accept the position of senior scientist in the Division of Physical Anthropology. Cowan joined the Smithsonian staff in 1957 as assistant curator in the Department of Botany, NMNH. He leaves the directorship in 1972, and retires from the position of Senior Scientist in September 1985.
