Summary

  • Smithsonian Board of Regents appoints a Commission on the Future of the Smithsonian Institution and charges it with "an examination of the Smithsonian, its mandate and its roles, and an examination of the cultural, societal, and technological factors that influence its capacity to act." The Commission was chaired by Maxine F. Singer of the Carnegie Institution, and also included Barber B. Conable, Jr., Paul DiMaggio, Sandra M. Faber, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Stephen Jay Gould, Robert E. Grady, Najeeb Halaby, Neil Harris, Irene Hirano, Ruth S. Holmberg, Roy M. Huhndorf, Jorge Klor de Alva, William H. Luers, Michael A. Mares, John S. Mayo, Frank Press, Wilbur Ross, John C. Sawhill, Lloyd G. Schermer, Harold K. Skramstad, Jr., and R. James Woolsey.
  • The Commission published its report in 1995, addressing the physical plant, core activities, outreach, financial challenges, and governance of the Smithsonian.
