Attendees at the Chairman's Committee Reception in the Enid A Haupt Garden for the presentation of the 1997 Computerworld Smithsonian Award Program were left to right: Dr. David K. Allison, Division of Information Technology and Society at National Museum of American History; tenth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1994-1999) Ira Michael Heyman (1930- ); Spencer Crew, director of the National Museum of American History (1994-2001, acting director since 1992); and Patrick J. McGovern, founder and chairman of the International Data Group and Chairman of the Chairman's Committee. The James Smithson Bicentennial Medal was awarded to McGovern at this event.
