Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, William F. Colcock, Rufus Choate, and William C. Preston.
  • Mr. Hawley took the chair, and the proceedings of the last meeting were read. The Secretary made a statement regarding the election of a chancellor, as the office was vacant after the election of Mr. Fillmore to the Presidency of the United States. The board then resolved that they would proceed to elect a chancellor, whose term of office was to continue until March 4th, 1853. The ballots being counted, Roger M. Taney, Chief Justice of the United States, was unanimously elected. Mr. Bache then read the report of the Executive Committee for the year 1850; it was laid until the Treasurer's statement could be prepared. The reading of the Secretary's annual report "was then commenced." An account of several memoirs that had been presented during the last year, along with copies, were placed upon the table. The board then adjourned to meet the following Friday the 10th at 10:00 AM.
