Summary

  • Present: Milliard Fillmore, James A. Pearce, Jefferson Davis, William F. Colcock, Graham G. Fitch, and Henry W. Hilliard. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, William W. Seaton, James M. Mason, Alexander Dallas Bache, Joseph G. Totten, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
  • The chancellor called the meeting to order, then read the proceedings of the previous meeting, which were approved. The Secretary presented Mr. Jewett's report on the library, which was read and ordered to be printed. The Secretary presented a letter from Rev. N. Paddock asking for the cooperation of the Institution with an "Educational Institution proposed to be established" in Washington. A letter from Hon. Caleb Cushing with a list of "Chinese books for sale" was also presented. The proposition of Mr. Harmon "relative to architecture, was called up, " but no action was taken. The board then adjourned to meet the following Saturday at 10:00 AM.
