Summary

  • Present: Millard Fillmore, William W. Seaton, Jefferson Davis, James M. Mason, Richard Rush, Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, James A. Pearce, Alexander Dallas Bache, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William Preston.
  • The Secretary stated to the board that since the last meeting, Mr. James. A Pearce had been appointed a regent from the U.S. Senate, and that there were now vacancies on the board to be filled from the U.S. House of Representatives; the Secretary also stated that his report "on the operations of the institution" was ready, but that its reading should be deferred until the vacancies on the board were filled. The chairman of the Executive Committee, Mr. Seaton, stated that the meeting took place too soon after the end of the fiscal year to "permit accounts to be made up," and requested that he be allowed to make his report at the following meeting. The chairman of the Building Committee, Mr. Totten, then made the same request. After no objection was made, the presentation of both reports was postponed until the board's next meeting. Answering a question from the chancellor, the Secretary "stated, in general terms, what business would occupy the attention of the Board at this session." The board then adjourned to meet on Friday the 11th at 11:00 AM.
