Summary

  • Present: Millard Fillmore, William W. Seaton, Jefferson Davis, James M. Mason, Henry W. Hilliard, Alexander Dallas Bache, and Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, George P. Marsh, Robert McClelland, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
  • The board met in the office of the U.S. Vice-President in the Capitol. Mr. Seaton "was called to the chair" and announced the "object of the meeting to be to elect a Chancellor in place of Mr. Dallas," whose term had expired; Mr. Fillmore was unanimously elected. The board resolved that the chancellor and Secretary be requested to "communicate to Hon. George M. Dallas the high appreciation entertained by the Board of his services as a Regent," especially during the period of organization of the Institution, their thanks for the "manner in which he discharged his duties of the presiding officer" of the Institution, and their "respect for his character as a gentleman and scholar." The board also resolved that the secretary inform the President of the Senate there existed a vacancy in the board after the expiration of Mr. Pearce's term in the Senate. The board then adjourned.
