  • Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, James A. Pearce, Jefferson Davis, Henry W. Hilliard, Robert McClelland, George P. Marsh, Alexander Dallas Bache, Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, Sidney Breese, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
  • Mr. Totten presented the Building Committee's revised report. Mr. Hilliard read a letter from Mr. Squier which was referred to the Secretary and the Executive Committee. The board resolved "that as the discharge of the duties assigned to the Assistant Secretary...are now such as to give entire employment to his time, he receive from the first instant, the full compensation provided by the resolution of the board, adopted January 26, 1847"; that when the board adjourns, it do so to meet March 7th at 10:00 AM in the office of the U.S. Vice-President in the Capitol to elect a chancellor, as Mr. Dallas's "term of office as Regent" was to expire on the 4th of March. The Assistant Secretary read his report "relative to the library." The board then adjourned.
