Summary

  • Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, Alexander Dallas Bache, George P. Marsh, Robert McClelland, and Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry. Present by Invitation: Dr. Robert Hare. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, James A. Pearce, Jefferson Davis, Sidney Breese, Henry W. Hilliard, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
  • Mr. Seaton presented the revised report of the Executive Committee, withdrawn to include accounts up to the first day of 1849, which was accepted. The secretary read a letter from Dr. Hare, regarding the gift of "his apparatus to the institution," which was ordered to be placed in the journal. Mr. Bache presented letters from J. Guillemard and Professor Faraday regarding James Smithson, which were ordered to preserved in the archives of the Institution. From the Building Committee, Mr. Seaton read a letter from Mr. Owen regarding the publication his work "Hints on Public Architecture." The board resolved that the Building Committee be authorized to "transfer, out of the appropriations originally made for experiments on building materials, a sum not exceeding two hundred dollars, to the appropriations heretofore made, for the publication of a volume on public architecture."
  • The board then considered appropriations for the next year based on the recommendations of the Executive Committee, which were adopted. The board resolved that the chancellor and the secretary be authorized to exchange Treasury notes belonging to the Institution for U.S. stock; that the certificates of this stock "be taken in the name of The Chancellor and Secretary," and that they be at the disposal of the same people under the "regulations heretofore existing as to the Treasury notes for the purposes of the institution, in accordance with several appropriations of the Board." The board also resolved that the secretary be authorized to appoint someone whose salary was not to exceed four hundred dollars per year, to "act as book-keeper and accountant of the institution and to perform such other duties as are specified in the report of the Executive Committee."
  • The secretary presented a "copy of the last edition of Dr. Hare's Chemistry," which contained illustrations of his "apparatus," which had become the property of the Institution. The board resolved that the secretary be requested to prepare a catalogue of Dr. Hare's apparatus, "illustrated by impressions from the original blocks." The board then adjourned to meet the following Saturday at 11:00 AM.
