- Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, James A. Pearce, Sidney Breese, Jefferson Davis, Henry W. Hilliard, George P. Marsh, Robert McClelland, Alexander Dallas Bache, and Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
- The board resolved that the Secretary and Executive Committee be authorized to present to Mr. Squier and Mr. Davis two hundred copies of their memoir in the first volume of the "Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge." Mr. Marsh presented a letter form John R. Bartlett with a plan for an improved English language dictionary to be made "under the auspices" of the Institution. The board resolved that the secretary be authorized to purchase for 150 dollars the lithographic stones which were traced for the designs of the first volume of "Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge." Mr. Seaton presented letters from various people applying for employment with the Institution. The secretary discussed the statement made in his report regarding the "valuable donation of apparatus" made to the Institution by Dr. Robert Hare, and the board then resolved that the chancellor, Secretary, and Mr. Pearce be a committee to communicate to Dr. Hare the thanks of the board.
- The Secretary stated that the first volume of "Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge" had been distributed among major colleges, libraries, and "learned societies," but not yet to individuals. The secretary presented a list of donations to the Institution and letters from various "distinguished individuals" expressing approval of the plan of the proposed '"Bibliographia Americana." The board then adjourned to meet the following Wednesday at 11:00 AM.
