  • Present: George M. Dallas, Sidney Breese, George P. Marsh, Robert McClelland, Alexander Dallas Bache, Joseph G. Totten, Rufus Choate. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, William W. Seaton, James A. Pearce, Jefferson Davis, Henry W. Hilliard, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
  • The committee appointed on the 23rd of December regarding the duties of the assistant secretary until March 19, 1849 made a report accompanied by resolutions which were adopted. The board resolved that the duties should include "preparation of catalogues of books suitable for the commencement of the library," following the plan of organization adopted by the board, the purchase of more books on the topic of bibliography, the "collection and systematic arrangement, for purposes of comparison, of the printed catalogues of the principal libraries" of the U.S and "information in regard to the expenditure, plans of increase, and other particulars relating to" such libraries. The board also resolved that the assistant secretary perform these duties under the supervision of a committee of three to work with the secretary and be appointed by the chancellor, and to receive compensation determined by the Executive Committee, under one thousand dollars.
  • The chancellor then appointed Mr. Choate, Mr. Marsh, and Mr. Bache to this committee. The secretary brought up the topic of payment for the assistant secretary for his services rendered in the past year, and the board resolved that the subject be referred to the Executive Committee. The board then adjourned.
