Summary

Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, George P. Marsh, Robert McClelland, Henry W. Hilliard, Alexander Dallas Bache, Joseph G. Totten, and Rufus Choate. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, James A. Pearce, Jefferson Davis, Sidney Breese, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
George P. Marsh and Robert McClelland, appointed from the House of Representatives to replace Robert Dale Owen and William J. Hough, whose appointments had expired, took their seats. Mr. Hilliard, who was re-appointed, also took his seat. The resolution offered by Mr. Choate on the 21st of December regarding the appointment of three to a committee to consider services to be rendered by the assistant secretary before March 19, 1849, was adopted. The chancellor appointed Messrs. Choate, Bache, and McClelland to the committee. The secretary stated that during the past year, with the consent of the Executive Committee, he had given a series of lectures at Princeton, for which he received one thousand dollars, which after deducting certain expenses, he "had given credit to the Board in his account for the present half year." The board then adjourned to meet the following Friday at 12:00 PM.
