Smithsonian Institution, Board of Regents, Minutes, 1847

Summary

Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, William J. Hough, Robert Dale Owen, Alexander D. Bache; later Henry W. Hilliard and Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, James A. Pearce, Lewis Cass, Sidney Breese, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
The board met and then adjourned to meet at 8:00 PM the same day. The chancellor presented a letter from Mr. Stabler requesting additional compensation for constructing a seal and press for the Institution; the request was referred to the Executive Committee, which was given power to grant the request at its discretion. Mr. Owen again requested to be relieved of his duties on the Executive Committee, explaining that his duties on the Building Committee took up much of his time, and that if his request was granted, the board would be able to fill the vacancy before it adjourned. The board granted Mr. Owen's request and elected Mr. Pearce to take his place. Mr. Bache moved for a reconsideration of the motion offered by him at the previous meeting regarding the assistant secretary acting as librarian, asking it to be laid on the table, which was granted by the board. The board resolved that the messenger be paid 400 dollars per year and then adjourned to meet the next day at 10:00 AM.
