Smithsonian Institution, Board of Regents, Minutes, 1847

Summary

Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, James A. Pearce, William J. Hough, Robert Dale Owen, Alexander Dallas Bache, Gideon Hawley, and Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, Lewis Cass, Sidney Breese, Henry W. Hilliard, Rufus Choate, Richard Rush, and William C. Preston.
The board postponed their visit to the Institution's building. Mr. Owen submitted the application of Caleb Buckingham for "additional compensation" than indicated in his contract for water supplies for the building. Mr. Seaton presented an application from Mr. Archer requesting "remuneration" for his building plans. The board resolved that it "approve the course pursued by the Building Committee in reference to the compensation given to Mr. Archer" and that "he had no claim on the institution on account of architectural services." From the Executive Committee, Mr. Owen made a report relating to the finances of the Institution over the next four years or until the building was completed.
The board then resolved that the reports of the Building Committee, Secretary, and Executive Committee be entered "at large" in the journal of proceedings. The board then adjourned to the following Monday morning at 9:00 AM.
