  • Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, George Evans, William J. Hough, Robert Dale Owen, Henry W. Hilliard, Alexander Dallas Bache, Richard Rush. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, Lewis Cass, Sidney Breese, Joseph G. Totten, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, William C. Preston.
  • The secretary reported that he had written to the Treasury Department requesting the Treasury notes mentioned in the board's resolution the previous meeting, that he had been informed that they couldn't be furnished at the present time "for want of printed forms," and that they would be kept in the Treasury Department for the present. The secretary placed before the board a letter from Mr. Bartlett offering for publication an account of the recent progress in ethnology, which might serve as the first in a series on the topic; a letter from Mr. Allen on the importance of the subject of ventilation, and a letter with "three sectional drawings of the our country from the direction of Ohio." The board resolved that the Secretary be authorized to "cause to be instituted a series of experiments to determine the economical value" of different building materials used in the United States.
  • Mr. Hough gave notice of a proposition which he intended to move for the "reception and safe keeping of Mr. Catlin's" collection on Indians and presented the board with a request from Mr. Henry R. Schoolcraft regarding a paper on ethnology which he desired to prepare. The board then adjourned to meet the following Monday at 10:00 AM.
